College Board Examinations

College Board offers several important tests that you will likely take during your time in high school including the PSAT9, PSAT/MMSQT, the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and Advanced Placement (AP) exams.

Important Information Regarding College Board Exam Accommodations

The PSAT9 is taken by freshmen in mid-October. The results of this test are used to determine appropriate course level placement (Academic, College Prep, Honors).

The PSAT is a practice test meant to prepare students for the SAT. It is given only once per year in October. At Fair Lawn High School, all students in the tenth grade are required to sit for this tes. Juniors and seniors have the option to take the test, but we very strongly encourage all juniors to take it.  Juniors who take the PSAT are eligible for the National Merit Scholarship.

SAT and SAT Subject Tests

These examinations are administered in October, November, December, January, April, May and June. Registration materials may be obtained in the guidance office or online. Juniors may take the April, May or June examination: seniors should check the college catalogues for the SAT deadline required by a prospective school. Some colleges require the SAT Subject Tests; check with your counselor.

Advanced Placement Exams

The AP Examinations are administered each year in May and represent the culmination of college-level work in a given discipline in a secondary school setting. Rigorously developed by committees of college and AP high school faculty, the AP Exams test students' ability to perform at a college level.

All students enrolled in an AP course at Fair Lawn High School are required to take the corresponding exam. Registration occurs in December through the Testing Office.

PARCC Testing

In 2015, the State of New Jersey adopted an online assessment called The Partnership for Assessment for Readiness of College and Careers (PARCC). PARCC is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and is designed to determine a student’s readiness for college and career. It will help parents and teachers to determine whether or not students have achieved grade level standards. PARCC Testing occurs in the spring usually during the months of April and May.

The following descriptions are provided as an introduction and summary to some of the resources found on the PARCC website.
